Food Supply to Prepare for a Blackout

During a blackout, refrigerators and freezers will not be supplied with the necessary electricity. Besides the adequate supply of drinking water, a durable stock of non-perishable food items for at least 14 days is essential.

At the start of a blackout, you should first consume all food from your fridge and freezer. Your emergency food stock, on the other hand, should be completely non-perishable, have a long shelf life, and be preparable with simple means such as a gas stove. Canned fruits and vegetables, rice, pasta, as well as special complete meals in powder form are well suited for this purpose and ensure that you can maintain a good and balanced diet even in an emergency.

For cooking, a propane gas-powered stove is recommended.

πŸ’‘ Tip Canned goods do not last forever. It's best to organize your food supplies by expiration date, placing newer (longest-lasting) items at the back of the shelf. It is advisable to regularly consume your stock to avoid wasting stored food.

Tips & Usage

How Much Gas Do I Need for Cooking?

The gas consumption depends on the power, measured in kilowatts (kW), of the gas grill. With a power of 1 kW, the average consumption is about 100 grams of gas per hour. Thus, a gas grill or stove with about 4 kW power consumes approximately 400 grams of gas per hour at full load. Accordingly, you can use the grill with a 5 kg propane gas bottle for about 12 hours - which equates to approximately 24 meals with 30 minutes of flame usage.

The burn time for a gas cartridge with 450 grams of butane-propane gas mixture lasts about 2 hours - with this, you can prepare approximately 4 meals with 30 minutes of flame use each. However, the actual consumption may vary depending on the material used.

Baby Food & Pets

If applicable, also pay attention to stocking up on the right amounts of food for babies and toddlers, considering their special needs. Similarly, an appropriate amount of food for any pets should be planned and stored for emergencies.
